How to set up a voice assistant for Claude Code
Five steps, a few minutes, and no configuration files. This assumes you already have Claude Code installed and signed in.
Before you start
- A Mac on macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon or Intel.
- Claude Code, installed and signed in to your own Claude account. Cyan Voice drives it; it does not replace it.
1. Install it
Paste this into Terminal:
curl -fsSL https://cyanvoice.com/install.sh | shIt downloads the app, checks what it downloaded against a published checksum, puts it in your Applications folder and starts it. There is a disk image if you would rather drag it across yourself.
2. Let it hear you
macOS will ask for the microphone and for speech recognition the first time each is needed. Both are required: one to hear you, one to turn what it heard into words. Setup walks you through them.
3. Connect it to Claude Code
Cyan Voice installs the hooks that let it know what your sessions are doing. Setup does this for you, and it is reversible: removing the app removes them.
4. Choose how it talks and listens
- A voice. Apple's system voices are free and sound like system voices. There is also an on-device voice you can download, which sounds like a person and still never touches the network.
- A persona. Jarvis is the default: brief, formal, reports rather than chats. There are plainer ones.
- A wake phrase. "Hey Claude" by default. Add your own, or turn wake phrases off and use a hotkey instead.
5. Try it
Start something in Claude Code that takes a minute, then walk away. When it finishes you will hear what happened, and the microphone will be open for you to answer.
If it is not talking. Check that "Speak on task finish" is on in Settings, and that the completion threshold is not set higher than the task took. By default Cyan Voice stays quiet about jobs that finish in under a minute, on the grounds that you were probably still watching.
Common questions
How long does setup take?
A few minutes. The longest part is granting the microphone and speech recognition permissions, which macOS asks for once each.
Do I need to edit any config files?
No. Cyan Voice installs its own hooks into Claude Code during setup, and removing the app removes them.
Why is it not saying anything?
By default it stays quiet about tasks that finish in under a minute, since you were probably still watching. That threshold is in Settings, along with the switch for speaking on task finish at all.
Can I use it on more than one Mac?
Two at once. You can move the licence between machines whenever you like.
